Description of how we did it.

First thing your going to need to do is find an old console style Television set. When I say a console TV I mean the old floor model TV sets that looked like furniture.

Plans for building your own Power Compact Canopy

The one thing that seems to be a problem with saltwater hobbiest is the fact that "standard" off the shelf lighting hoods never provide enough light. I was faced with this delemia because I want to be able to keep coals at some point down the road. As you can see from my previous lighting solution it really was not much of a solution. I had two different florecent hoods on the tank. A single and a double fixture and I was still at a point of 2.5W per gal or less. To solve this problem I designed and built a canopy that would sit over top of the tanks and house some power compact florecent bulbs and ballasts that I purchased from AH Supply.com. I now have between 2.7W and 3.5W per gal using PC lighting. PC lights have been reported as giving off more light per watt than standard florecent or even VHO florecent. I have built two different variations on my canopy design. Both provide superior access to the tank so that removal of the canopy is not required to do even the most invasive maintance on the tank. Here is how I did it.

Plans for building a sump stand/tank stand out of 2X4's and plywood

I built this stand to hold my sump and refugium for my 80 gal reef tank.  I built the stand much larger than I needed to so that I would have plenty of room to expand the system should I want to.  I used 2 X 4's for the main structure of the stand and then 3/8" plywood to cover the surfaces.  You can ofcourse use what ever size wood you want but I would not recommend anything smaller than 2 X 4's or 3/8" plywood.
